New Website Listed
I added a new website to my links on the sidebar:
This website publishes writing by people with any kind of disability. See their submissions guidelines.
They published one of my articles on MCS, multiple chemical sensitivity, a couple of years ago. I find the quality of work on this site is excellent. I was surprised to find they pay for stories, poems and articles. However, they also need donations. If you can send them something to help pay the writers with disabilities who submit to them, it would be wonderful. You will find a way to donate on their website. Maren O. Mitchell, NCWN West member, popular at reading Friday night
Maren O. Mitchell, author of the self-help book, Beat Chronic Pain, an Insider's Guide, captivated her audience at Brother's Willow Ranch Restaurant Friday night. Maren's poetry is popular and she is published in excellent journals, but this intelligent and charming writer impressed me with her book based on her own experience. Unwilling to become dependent on narcotic pain prescriptions after debilitating spinal surgery, Mitchell researched other means to deal with chronic pain. In her book we see her quirky sense of humor and her determination and strength of character.
Last night, she stood holding lightly to the backs of two chairs while reading and seemed to have no pain at all. But she says she fights it every day and she shares her methods in her book.

As I set up our schedule for 2014, I hope to have Scott Owens back with us.
His classes are extremely popular and one of the reasons is because he is one of the most generous writers I know. Beginning poets are not discouraged, but receive gentle notes with suggestions as to how to improve their work. He is personable and approachable. I have met some of our highly touted editors of literary journals who will hardly talk to lesser known poets, but not Scott. I am happy he is a regular on our faculty.

Looking at the Poetic Line
Just as the sentence is arguably the fundamental unit of prose, the line is arguably the fundamental unit of poetry. More than image, metaphor, concision, or imagination—all of which are also crucial elements—the line gives a poem essential force and significance. We’ll briefly examine some theory of line, look at several poems’ uses of line, and discuss how more conscientious attention to this oft-overlooked element can inform and enrich our own poems’ potential.
Participants may email one original poem to Michael for inclusion in the discussion—preferably 30 lines or fewer. His email address is crazyquilt67@gmail.com. Please send poems no later than Friday, Oct. 5.
